Description

Step into the role of an analytical chemist as you explore the chemical composition of over-the-counter pain relief medications. Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), students prepare and test pharmaceutical samples, identify active ingredients, and interpret real-world data. This program blends medicinal chemistry with advanced instrumental techniques, offering insights into drug formulation, purity analysis, and applications in health, industry, and forensic science.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the structure and function of paracetamol and identify key functional groups
  • Describe the principles of HPLC and its role in analytical chemistry.
  • Prepare and analyse samples of commercial paracetamol using HPLC.
  • Interpret chromatograms to determine the identity and purity of organic compounds.
  • Reflect on the real-world applications of analytical chemistry in medicine and pharmacology.
  • Determine the concentration of parabens in cosmetic samples
