Over the 19th to the 21st of September Yarra Ranges Tech School, with the support of Casey, Ballarat, Bendigo Tech Schools and KIOSC, worked with Scouts Victoria on a Sustainable Housing and STEM Careers camp. 27 scouts from regional and rural Victoria descended on Yarra Ranges Tech School with their scout leaders for a program filled with technology tasters, site visits and guest presentations.
Over the three days students were set with the challenge of designing a sustainable house. This culminated on Wednesday with each of the teams presenting their housing concept. All designs were exceptional drawing on the use of energy efficient and sustainable materials, energy, and placement and met the user briefs.
Students were introduced to Virtual Reality design, robotics, drones, simulation software, materials science, 3D printing and eSports during the program. In addition thanks to the support of the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group of the Department of Defence students were treated to a tour of the Defence Science and Technology Group’s research facilities at Fishermans Bend. The following morning Alex and Hamish from the Australian Army drone racing team joined us to speak about the all things drone racing.
A big thank you to the Scout Leaders for volunteering their time and we are looking forward to working on another STEAM camp in 2023.
