Description

How can emerging technologies transform the way we design, create and customise textiles?

Textile Innovations invites students to explore the meeting point between traditional textile skills and emerging design technologies. Students begin by developing their ideas through 2D design, pattern, annotation and material thinking before transitioning into CAD and digital fabrication. This staged approach builds students’ digital literacy and helps them understand how hand-drawn concepts can become precise digital files for production.

Throughout the program, students will experiment with 3D printed filament patterns on fabric, explore how flexible structures can be embedded into textiles, and design a laser-cut leather keyring that is finished with hand-sewn details. The program strengthens students’ confidence with design development, safe use of tools and equipment, emerging technologies, and the role of innovation in contemporary textile design. By the end of the program, students will have created small textile-based prototypes and developed a clearer understanding of how traditional making skills and digital technologies can work together in a modern design process.
